Brett Favor

If number 4 returns to the Packers after retiring because he feels he still has some gas in the tank, I can see that, I guess. He won't get another chance at it and I wouldn't begrudge someone trying to dodge a lifetime of regret.

On the other hand, it hardly seems like he has anything to regret. Brett has a ring and he took a young team pretty damned far last year. Other greats have left the game while they still had good football in them (Barry Sanders, for instance) and are still known as some of the best that ever played the game.

After a few years of speculation, he really seemed earnest this time when he retired. Then he signed the retirement paperwork (the big difference between this time and all the previous times). Nice and tidy end to a hall of fame career. But still, if he really had the burning desire to return to the game, I could understand that.

HOWEVER, if he makes all this commotion, derails the Packers pre-season, then takes $20 million to NOT PLAY, I'll have lost all respect for him as a person. He could easily take a television gig or do some product hawking if he's just concerned about money, but I'm guessing he's already pretty well off, financially speaking. So if he takes the money and disappears, he was a great QB, but not a nice person after all. It would be a big stab in the back of all the uber-loyal Packer fans - especially in Wisconsin.

Even as a Bear fan, I hope that doesn't happen.
