The Euro 2008 tourney is in full effect! The matches have been killer, in particular Turkey - Czech (Turkey scored 3 goals in the last 15 minutes to steal it). I guess I'm rooting for Holland since I love that country and had good times smoking their wares.
Anyone else into this? It's a nice mini-World Cup that trims off the fat (No USA) and is really intense. If you get ESPN2 or ESPN Classic I highly recommend catching the Quarter Final matches starting this Thursday.

Show me yours and I'll show you mine...
It's somewhat pointless to be upset about too much as a Cubs fan these days, but this is more about being frustrated by media coverage of America's passtime than anything else.
Why is it that it is okay to pley Zambrano's meltdown in the dugout as frequently as Howard Dean's meltdown in the last Democratic primaries, but it's not okay to play the blown calls that lead to the inning that lead to the meltdown. Is it MLB striving to protect the credibility of the men in black making the calls? I think we all realize that the umpires are just humans making (or not, as the case may be) the calls during a game - and they make mistakes. In an unprecedented pro-Cubs moment, even the ESPN guys admitted it was a blown call. Granted, teams shouldn't fold up so that a blown call extends an inning to the point where the other team wins, but that's not really my point... Players are human, too (well, kinda). Why are they subject to the scrutiny of the camera any more than the officiating crew?

Oh Cincy Part 2
It looke like our 'ol pal Dusty checks in on killing for sports as I refer to the March 11th post.
Bruce, Votto, and Bailey are now regulars on the Cincy team and doing very well.
Patterson is on the bench and should have been drop kicked out of that town.
He has also been limiting pitch counts for two other young pitchers: Volquez-who is an absolute phenom (he came over in the Hamilton trade) and Cueto (who has shown signs of great stuff)
Votto has been banged up lately and here is a quote from 'ol Dust:

A+ to Z
Holy crap, Zambrano's good. Chicagosports dot com reported that, after tonight's 4 for 5 performance, Big Z's season average is higher than any Pirates starting position player. All that while throwing 7 innings of 4 hit baseball.
If the Cubs make it into October, it might be a good idea for Lou to start Zambrano in every game played... In all positions... Like Satchel Page on both sides of the plate.

Solid Gould
If you haven't already heard, Robbie Gould (with another year left on his contract) just became the highest paid kicker in the NFL. Maybe ever. He got $15.5 million until 2013 with a signing bonus of $4.25 million. I think Lovie still regrets calling that one timeout to end Gould's perfect streak. I suppose if Hester is switching to feature receiver, somebody has to score.

Pennsylvania Hockey Mania
Later tonight, the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins are matching up in the NHL Eastern Conference finals. This is HUGE. I think I am dreaming
I don't know if any one watched the Cubs play the Mets last night but what a fucking great game.
So many things right now feel like a dream I am afraid I am going to wake up soon.
Who ever replace Big Z's brain with a portion of Mad Dog's. Thank you from the bottom of heart and the depths of my soul.

At the same time Kerry Wood is becoming one the most dominate closers in baseball. He seems at ease with this new role and has an aura of a closer. He walks out on the mound and it’s fucking game over baby.
While having this dream with a smile on my face a single tear of joy rolls down my cheek.
Also in this dream we play good team baseball, only make a few errors, run good bases, sprinkle in a few steals, show patience at the plate. Make opposing pitchers work and see a lot of pitches. Force teams into there bull pens early with high pitch counts.
The Cubs led the National League with a .366 on-base percentage on Monday.
Kosuke Fukudome, who leads the league in pitches seen per plate appearance (4.58), led all Cubs regulars with a .442 OBP going into Monday's game against the Mets, followed by Geovany Soto (.437), Mark DeRosa (.425), Derrek Lee (.419), Reed Johnson (.418) and Ryan Theriot (.408).
I am sure this stat is even better after last night against the Mets.
Oh and the young promising talent finally pulls there heads out of there collective asses and nock in 5 runs with some solid hitting. Thank you Ronny and Felix for your fantastic late at bats. That was a slam the door shut, step on the fucking throats, fucking awesome hitting. Don’t beat them break them. Just awesome.
I wake up feeling a warm glow of Cub goodness, with skip in my step and whistling.

Cubs win 5 in a row!
Is no one watching baseball! The Cub are looking very un Cub like. We have already swept a series and have won 5 in a row. I don’t think that has happened to me in my lifetime for the start of a season.
We won in spite of ourselves and we never do THAT! The two marathon games that we usually lose we won. We are trying to break the stranded on base record again; in two games we stranded 28 batters! How the fuck do you strand 28 batters. The good news is we still won.
If we can get our starting pitching worked out and find a true lead off hitter. Get either a stud second basemen or short. We will be set to make a run. It maybe to early but I am feeling really good about my Cub. Of course I am a Cub fan so I am a little soft in the head.
I am liking my chances of getting on TV for the Cubs Washington game April 25th thru 27th. I will be with 5 buddies and my cousin, who is a hot little blond. Look for the the six idiots in right field wearing hachimaki’s(Japanese head bands that says stuff. I have picked out six that say “Number 1, Fighting Spirit and Victory”.

Hockey Fever - Contract It!
Ah, It's that time of year. The snow is finally gone, flowers are popping up everywhere, the Cubs still haven't have broken my heart, and I finally can give a shit about the NHL.Yup, Tonight marks the beginning of the race for the Stanley Cup. Since 99.999% of the population cares even less about the NHL than I do, here's my rooting guide for the 2008 NHL playoffs:
Montreal Canadians -vs- Boston Bruins
Oh, boy! This is gonna be a series to watch. These two teams fucking HATE each other. I'd like to pick the Bruins out of sentimentality, but they are way outgunned by Montreal.
Washington Capitals -vs- Philadelphia Flyers
I can't decide if I like Ovechkin more than I hate (Caps owner) Leonsis. It's a tough one. The Capitals are the better team, but I'm going with Philly as a "fuck you" to AOL Boy.
Detroit Red Wings -vs- Nashville Predators
Normally I'd be all over a chance to piss on the Red Wings, but my hatred for Nashville is even greater. This November the city of Nashville finally killed the move of the Predators to Ontario (which I saw as one of the first steps in reforming the sorry state of the NHL). So now another city that has zero business in having a NHL franchise keeps on dragging down the sport, and I have to throw out a pick for the Maxi-Pad brigade.
Minnesota Wild -vs- Colorado Avalanche
I'm still pissed at Minnesota for letting the Northstars escape to Dallas (see below). I'm holding that grudge to this day, and picking the ex-Nordiques (Colorado) to pull the upset in this series.

Hey, It's a re-match from last year's playoffs. In 2007 the Senators looked invincible - Right now they're practically invisible. I'm going with the Flightless Sea Birds.

25 at bats, 11 hits, one homer, 6 RBI’s, batting a 458, on base % 581 and slugging .708. Oh yea a canon for an arm, speed to steal bases and can really work a pitcher into a count.

Opening Day
7 Days 3 hours 24 minutes to opening day. Who else is taking off work? I wish I still was in town to make the first game.
I wish I could say I miss Chicago more but.... two winters of no snow, not cold enough to freeze, shorts and flip flops year around. It's hard to make it north.
I still will be belly up at a bar in my Cub gear at noon on Monday.

NCAA Tourney
I had the chance to watch Duke, Purdue and Xavier practice today-very lame.
They did not run any set plays-all free throws and lay up practice.
I'm looking forward to possibly seeing some good games and, possibly, a great upset.

Spring Ahead
The cubs will probably be the story of the 2008 baseball season. If they manage to make the playoffs in back to back season it will be the first time Chicago (both squads) has made the playoffs two years in a row - -
1917, SOX - - - - 1918, cubs -- - - - - - 1919, SOX being the last time the greatest summer city in the world enjoyed consecutive trips to October (although technically I think the series in 1918 was played in September…weird eh)
…and the cubs are the only team to win in back to back consecutive postseasons (1907-1908) .
So I’m on record here saying that the cub will go to the playoffs this year and that’s all I will predict.
But so far, the best story of spring training is Brian Anderson. Could it be that this big donkey finally gets it? He is doing all the right things with his bat and playing great defense. I will feel better about the team I love being outflanked by the cub for Coco Crisp if BA emerges as the SOX centerfielder for the next few years.
No matter what the cubs do this summer I will be so happy if my beloved SOX are strong up the middle - -

This guy hits and gets on base and Baker wants him to be more aggressive.
Who needs patience in a lineup that already has a clog with Dunn, Phillips, Encarnacion, Gonzalez, Griffey and Ross (I like to call him F'Ing Dave Ross-His average sucks-and he drops balls!)

"It doesn't matter to me if a guy gets on base if he can't run. If he can't run he's just clogging up the bases"-does anybody remember a speedy Giant's or Cub's team under Dusty?

Pitching. He has inherited a great ace: Aaron Harang (one of my fantasy Nl only studs). This guy is great in the park he pitches in. After that, dusty ( i hope ciny don't trusty) baker has to shaking his damn head..."What, this all I inherit? " Yeah-you get Arroyo and that colorado loser (and a loser everywhere he has been) Josh Fogg and two promising youngsters: Bailey and Belisle. Belisle had some upside ago with LA Dodgers, but got creamed out there. I guess he thought pitching in Cincy would be better for his love life.
Let's see how he handles those two young arms (see Prior, Wood, Clement and Guzman)
Bullpen: Well, they signed old Cordero (he's not that old). But he had mixed success in Arlington and Milwaukee and now let's bring into the Great American Barnstorm! And we all know hoe Dusty holds onto to "his man" in the ninth inning...they already had Davey "Steady as Gravy" Weathers! They have a decent bullpen, but dusty always sticks with his "ninth inning money shot"
Dusty is no Torre or Larussa in the way he handles youngsters and veterans on the same ballclub. His lack of knowledge of "having guys on base" might be a good thing if he looks back on the history of the game and looks at the success of past teams. Balance! (and got on base)

They got rid of josh hamilton (out of options kinda move and he is closer to some good mexican shit) and signed our dear friend corey patterson...what the? Patterson has to be one of the most inept major leaguers since Gary Scott. And to a minor league deal!-I have some reason to believe he will be the opening day starter. I also think Dusty is behind all the Ryan Freel trade rumors lately. what about Norris Hopper? The guy hits and gets on base everywhere and has speed (like freel). what about the kid Jay Bruce? The outfield situation has confused me for sometime in Cincy and Baker has confirmed that it is all f'ed up. Now, though, it his doing.
Oh, he added jerry hairston jr. to the roster.
Pitching. He has inherited a great ace: Aaron Harang (one of my fantasy Nl only studs). This guy is great in the park he pitches in. After that, dusty ( i hope ciny don't trusty) baker has to shaking his damn head..."What, this all I inherit? " Yeah-you get Arroyo and that colorado loser (and a loser everywhere he has been) Josh Fogg and two promising youngsters: Bailey and Belisle. Belisle had some upside ago with LA Dodgers, but got creamed out there. I guess he thought pitching in Cincy would be better for his love life.
Let's see how he handles those two young arms (see Prior, Wood, Clement and Guzman)
Bullpen: Well, they signed old Cordero (he's not that old). But he had mixed success in Arlington and Milwaukee and now let's bring into the Great American Barnstorm! And we all know hoe Dusty holds onto to "his man" in the ninth inning...they already had Davey "Steady as Gravy" Weathers! They have a decent bullpen, but dusty always sticks with his "ninth inning money shot"
Dusty is no Torre or Larussa in the way he handles youngsters and veterans on the same ballclub. His lack of knowledge of "having guys on base" might be a good thing if he looks back on the history of the game and looks at the success of past teams. Balance! (and got on base)
At least his white players play mostly at night.

One Last Asscrewing from the Tribune Co
…or On the Considerable Consolation of Getting Drunk as Nero Fiddles
By the way, are there two or three s's when asscrewing is written as one word? Jeanz? Sam Zell? Anybody...?
It was William E. Munny, the professional killer, the name of the man with no name from Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven who said: “It’s a terrible thing killing a man. You take away all he’s got, and all he’s ever gonna have.”
I keep hearing these nigh-immortal words on mortality as I think of the fuckery that could - I REPEAT COULD befall the cub.
Zell is resolved to sell the park separately. He will first sell the naming rights, which I originally thought was not a big deal…
But you only have to know a little about business and the business of sports (and I fit that description) to know that most of that naming rights money in this case is going to go to the Tribune and Zell’s investors - not the ball club.
Did WhiteSOX ownership benefit from the naming agreement with that stupid phone company? Sure but they were able to channel a shitload of money into the team and the park experience, and believe me - - at that time the SOX park experience needed all the help it could get - - -
In the case of the Trib and its new ownership, they seem to be raiding the assets for the sake of the parent company. Did the cubs get the #1 free agent last year? Right. Did they acquire the top Japanese player this past off-season? Double right. But the seat licensing agreement, the proposed naming rights scenarios, and more importantly separating the team from the park seem to be all bad moves for the cubs in the long run.
And I hope no one reading here is stupid enough to believe that the State of Illinois purchasing and establishing Wrigley as a landmark is going to benefit the ball club. Blaggo’s crew may save Wrigley, help the neighborhood and prevent the beautiful old park from being the Skydome-esque eyesore that some of Zell’s developer buddies would have it become…
…and the purchase of Wrigley by the State of Illinois might even benefit all of us Illinoisans but remember the Bears are separate from Soldier Field and how’s that been working for the team?
The Bears have the advantage of long term ownership and dealing with the Park District Authority or whatever it is for 40 some years or whatever it is and even they have to go hat in hand to the park ownership and do not get the full benefits of the place they fill on Sundays. New cub ownership will be at the mercy of whoever ends up owning the organization’s greatest treasure because to a certain extent, there are people who love the park more than the team. It might not be too extreme to say that for some seasons, the team has needed the park more than the park has needed the team.
I am not sure how to feel about all this.
As a WhiteSOX fan, for years I have taken it from cub fans because you have that park. Part of me wants to say – Selling the field separately from the team gets the cubs one step closer to being the Schaumberg Cubs, y’all gonna love Schaumberg in the summer.
But as a recent convert to the beauty of Wrigley and the cub game experience (remember not cub fan, someone like me cannot switch sides unless the Chairman were to assrape my grandma)…but as someone who now loves and looks forward to going to a few games at that park this summer what looms seems to be the beginning of the end. It is this part of me that is sad.
The part of me that dominates in this internal debate (definitely internal because there is nothing I or all the actual cub fans in the world can do) that is the cynical, resigned but somewhat happy heathen who says ‘Come join me for as many beers as we can get in the shadow of that park this summer. If this is the beginning of some sort of end to one of the coolest places and neighborhoods in the history of summer neighborhoods, let’s slake our thirst with the delicious Pyle as ZellNero (or is it NellZero) burns all that has stood to benefit the Tribune, his Rome, his thing that decent men and women could give a shit for. Big Bust
I am so glad Wallace is gone. Let me say that it is official…the Ben Wallace signing was, is and will always be a bigger bust than the cubs’ Sorry-ano.
After hearing Lou’s initial spring training line up, I think Lou is un-washed up and is actually flirting with genius. I still think Sorriano is no longer a leadoff hitter but consider…
1. Sorriano – swinging away and not behaving like a true leadoff hitter but that’s ok because…
2. Theriot – the second leadoff man who is more suited to, and may still perform like a leadoff man
3. Fukudome – who is like a #2 and can do all those important things like hit behind the runner and move Theriot around the basepaths if he gets on
4. & 5. the bigger bats of Aramis and D-Lee.
I think it can work.
After that I don’t know much more about what cub hitters will do besides DeRosa. The only other prediction I’ll make is (I love the young catcher and I am glad the coward and loser Barret is gone) but I think Soto will not live up to expectations this year.
I will say more about my beloved WhiteSOX when I see how healthy Crede is and what the SOX do with two 3rd basemen, two shortstops, two second basemen and no centerfielder.

Cubs World Serieseseses
Since Ryan Dempster says the cubs are going to the World Series, we here at Killing for Sports ought to honor such a bold, not to say stupid, prediction. To celebrate the unjustified…er unprecedented optimism on the part of the cubs Canadian hurler here are
THE TOP THREE MOST IMPORTANT CUB WORLD SERIES APPEARANCES (as determined by me so I’m probably fucking wrong)
We’re counting down here from #3 to #1. Ready? I don’t give a crap. Here we go:
#3 – THE 1908 WORLD SERIES capping off one of the craziest pennant chases in
#2 – THE 1932 WORLD SERIES because the cubs were swept by the greatest franchise in all team sports, it is the only time in history that a Chicago team was seriously in contention with the great Yankees for anything (maybe the SOX battled the Yanks in the 50’s sort of but the WhiteSOX should not be in the same sentence as the Yankees of the 1950’s) and – BACK TO THE CUBS HERE it was the World Series when Babe Ruth called the shot. Babe Ruth has a greater role in World Series history than all
#1 – THE 1918 WORLD SERIES saw the cubs face the second or third greatest franchise in baseball history. Incidentally here is a ranking within a ranking...edP’s Top Three Baseball Squadrons counting down from #3 to #1…. 3.) BoSOX – 2.) Cardinals – 1.) Yankees. Who is going to argue that there is a team with more history than these three franchises? An argument could be made to substitute the Giants or the Dodgers in there somewhere but I am an American League guy so my lists are always going to be slanted in that direction. Oh, the 1918 Series was historic because it was the last World Series winner for the BoSOX until 2004 and we know the rest there. The Babe won the first game - - a 1-0 shut out over Hippo Vaughn (I think he was the original drummer for the Kurl Band, or was it the Hurl Band?) It was the only World Series played entirely in Septemebr….something to do with World War I. You can wiki this shit. Anytime the WS is affected by a war, Babe Ruth is pitching and the Red Sox clinch the victory on September 11th that’s some historic stuff and it deserves to be in the top #3 and it is my #1. And believe me since the advent of Big Mouth Schilling using the Red Sox as his preachifying pulpit, I am no Red Sox fan.

Misc Sports Shit Running Thru My Head
Cubs are Chicago’s Team Again
Don’t get me wrong, the Chicago White Sox are still my favorite team in town, and if I could choose a franchise and a franchise model to embrace I would still take the SOX over the cubs any day
…and I will still mock the cubs for 100 years of fuckery if they are eliminated from playoff contention this year….
But after the great run my beloved SOX had in 2005 & 2006, the Cubs have recaptured the baseball stage in Chicago and should be considered the city’s #1 franchise once again. Yeah the Bears unite the city but their only accomplishment last year was beating the Pack twice. The Bears have no offensive line and that is tantamount to saying the team has no heart. Call me when they get one and I will say they are in better shape than the cub.
The Bulls are a joke and I am not going to waste another sentence on them.
My beloved WhiteSOX, the season will be considered a success if the SOX finish in 2nd place. I will say more about my hopes and dreams for the SOX season later.
Sure the cubs have some roadblocks and weaknesses, but in the wake of the Bedard trade (I am not spellchecking the name of an Oriole, like the O’s ownership I can’t afford the time or expense)…if the cubs get Roberts I will cheer if for no other reason than to say “Hah hah you fucking fuck Soriano. Move down in the lineup and try to do something there”
Some would argue that the cubs do not have a pitching staff that can take them to the World Series. That may be true, but they have enough pitching and a diverse enough lineup (different types of hitters who can do different things, esp now with Fukudome) that they should make the regular season interesting and play competitive baseball. In a shocking turn, I will agree with Devin here that the cubs as constituted would play compelling ball in any division not just in the NL Central. Has it gotten weaker with the collapse of the Cards and Dusty managing the Reds? Maybe. But you play who you play and there are many guys on the cubs team who could adapt and flourish playing against any competition (even the mentally weak Z and Wood, Z acquitted himself well against a good D-backs team who were playing as good of a brand of baseball as the Yankees, Indians and almost any of the superior franchises in the AL)
I guess my thought here is we should all enjoy whatever the cubs can accomplish this year. The spotlight should be squarely on them for doing, mostly, the right things compared to the other clubs in town.
Relative to my team (the SOX) I am not down on Kenny for failing to get Hunter and Rowand and I've explained before why I was cool with Swisher rather than the dumptrucks of money for these other guys...but for all the good Kenny did the team his behavior with the press and even certain fan groups has been erratic at best and downright rude at other times. Come on Kenny. You did the impossible. You brought a World Series to Chicago. Don't be such a dick about it. The cubs are dealing with a far different sort of pressure than payroll and perception and Hendry doesn't look like he is about to crack. He already had one physical breakdown two years ago (?) in FL and I think he learned something from it. You, Kenny Williams, could learn something from the demeanor of the guy who generally manages the cub.

U-ribe not My-ribe
I love Juan Uribe. He completed the greatest sports season in my lifetime when he made the last two outs in the WhiteSOX World Series. I hope he plays well at 2nd this year. But I will not cry if the SOX make a deal for him in the middle of he season. I can see it play out…a contender loses a shortstop and needs someone and has young pitching to trade. Deal - and SOX fans will say goodbye to Uribe who was sometimes selfish at the plate but will always have a special place in the history of Chicago baseball.
Don’t get me wrong, my dream for this season is that everything clicks for the SOX and Uribe/Cabrera become a great middle infield tandem, Danny Richard (sp, Jeanz? Ozzie? Someone?)…D.R. becomes a super-sub but I live in the real world most of the time.

Um, Almost Perfect
or pretty perfect...
or kinda sorta like perfect.
The real winners were the fans for a change. That was a helluva game. I am on record (wherever that record is) as more of a baseball guy than a football guy but these playoffs have been great and the Superbowl was exciting.
It is not for me to say if it was well-played or not but I was on the couch with a headache that made me feel like I was going to vomit out my brain...
and I was still entertained by the game.
The other big winner?
Big Soda wins the first Killing for Sports Prognostication Award (also know as the KFSPA).
He called it somewhere here first and for that he gets a big wet kiss from me sometime before Superbowl XLIII (pronounced ex-el-eeee)...and maybe a free drink.
I am not a fan of either team (and I picked the Pats by more than two TDs so I'm not even a fan of my own pick at this point)...but I am happy for the youngest Manning.
I am most happy for Carl. I can't wait to hear how he pulled out this victory.
But I am equally horrified at the prospect of watching the stupid Dolphins toasting losses for another 36 years.
C'mon Bears, perfect season next year!

The Liar's Super Bowl XXLII Pick

Season Record: 176/90
Patriots (18-0) over Giants (13-6)
This time back in 2002, I was down in New Orleans for Super Bowl XXXVI. The Rams were 14 point favorites to knock off the scrappy Patriots with their rookie QB, Tom Brady. No one thought that the Pats had a chance against the "Greatest Show on Turf", but I was pulling for New England to turn the upset. It was a great fucking game, and the Patriots there and then became one of the greatest stories in the history of the NFL.
This game reminds me a lot of that one. No one is giving New York a chance (except for Carl), and everyone expects a New England blow-out. Six years later, and the tables have turned 180 degrees.
If I was more of a sentimentalist I'd pick the G-Men for an upset, but I'm not gonna fall for it.
I like the Pats.

Is it me or does Tom Brady look a hell of a lot like tv’s Dexter?
Be that here or there (or everywhere) Brady will carve up the depleted and already sort of crappy Giants secondary. Yeah the Pats have played close games near the end of the season and throughout the playoffs. They don’t seem to be setting more passing records in (wait for it) COLD FUCKING WEATHER WITH LOTS OF FUCKING WIND!!!!
I hate talking about weather except when it comes to football. Snow helps the offense and hinders the defense. Why? Because the offense knows where it is going but the defense has to react. Does anybody believe that RW McQuarters plays in a defensive secondary that is going to stop the Patriots offense? (Marc Silverman thought of that, not me but he's f'in right)

Meet the Mets
Thank you NY Mets for getting YoHo Santana the fuck out of the American League Central. That could translate into five more wins for our beloved White SOX.
In that division ya take wins wherever you can get them.
Not you as in you or me (whoever you are)...we aren't going to win anything.
I don't know what the acquisition of Santana does for the Mets' chances to win it all. I'd say if the cubs got him they'd be guaranteed to win their division (although things already look good on that front for the north side club)...
Devin will say that I know nothing about baseball, but now that Santana's traded the Twinkies are going to trade Joe Nathan next. If I were generally managing the cubs I'd think about packaging Carlos Marmol (sp? Jeanz, Z? Lou? anybody) and somebody else in a deal for the Twins lights out closer.
True, the cubs do not win their division in 07 without Carlos M out of the bullpen, but is he ready or can he ever be a closer?
Kerry Wood closing? Can cubs fans really depend on his rattley shoulder to go out and throw every day? Bob Howry? He's a great set up man, but when was the last time he closed games on a regular basis?

The Liar's NFL Divisional Playoffs Picks
Wow-wee - There are four great games happening this weekend. There isn't one stinker in the whole bunch, and they all should be well-matched games. Which is why what I'm about to do kinda freaks me out.
Last week I picked three road teams outta four, now this week I'm picking all four home teams to win. That doesn't make any sense. Hell, I'm picking against all three of my winners last week, and every year a wild-card team seems to make it to the Superbowl.
I don't care about all that noise - I see 4 home wins.

I'm hoping like hell that the Pack goes all the freakin' way this year - I'm talking Super Bowl Champs.
Why?
So that Favre fucking retires. All-y'all know that if they pick up a Super Bowl title that Brett's gonna do the classy thing and exit stage left.
If they don't win it all this year, getting this close will just whip Favre into a frenzy for another 5 or 6 seasons. I'm gonna like the NFC North a lot more with Brett's #4 hanging up in Lambeau.

Postgame: I effing love those blizzard games. Granted, the game was over before the half, but I could have watched another 6 quarters of Seattle getting buried in snow.

I'm really hoping that my Pack runs all over New England in Super Bowl XLII - It ain't gonna happen. Whoever comes up against the Pats on February 3rd is gonna be wholly outmatched, and the real fireworks are going down in the AFC playoffs over the next couple of weeks. Strap yourselves in.

I really want to pick the Bolts in an upset here, but I'm pretty damned sure that's because the Colts didn't bother to play their last regular-season game. That's a sucker's bet, and I'm not falling for it. Indianapolis is the better team.
Postgame: Oh yeah, that's why I wanted to pick the Chargers, because the Clots always eat turd when they rest everyone in the weeks leading up to the playoffs - I even fucking wrote that in my week 17 picks.
I gotta stop listening to my brain.

Cowboys (13-3) over Giants (11-6)
Okay, let's settle down, folks. I picked the Giants last week, but some normally-sane people are going friggin' nutty over 'em. They're just good enough to beat the rusty Bucs, but not a well-honed team like the Cowboys.

Postgame: OMG!!! Tony Romo totally pulled a "Romo". There will be many a NFL film dedicated to Tony's last-minute playoff melt-downs.
On a plus note; We get the possibility for another snow game in Green Bay next week.

The Other Kind of Gray Goose
Goose Gossage made it to baseball's Valhalla after hearing from the writers nine times "No flagon of ambrosia for you!"
I'm probably mixing my afterlife metaphors here but I don't care. I for one, welcome our new two inning closer/overlord to Cooperstown. It never bothered me that he would get pissed for being passed over time and again or when he'd go on Dan Patrick and argue with a certain dickhead from the Detroit Free Press (or the Cleveland Post un-Intelligencer or some such rag) who swore up and down that he would never cast a Hall of Fame vote for a reliever...
Granted, I was in first grade when he left the SOX so I do not really remember him playing for the South Siders but every baseball fan my age remembers those great Yankee teams of the late 1970's. If you watched any of those legendary victories I bet you remember that it was Rich Gossage on the mound in the 9th inning. The amazing thing about the end of some of those games was the last out was rarely a strike out. I seem to remember him battling Yaz at the end of the Bucky Dent game, fooling the great Carmine and getting him to pop up harmlessly somewhere in the infield.
I think he had more strikeout victims when the Yankees eliminated some of those great Royals teams in the playoffs but I'm not going to break down the numbers and game action for Mr. Gossage. Santi, how many times did Gossage strike out Pete LaCock?
